Amorphoid

Adept’s Amorphoid is a novel silicate ballistic material built for lightweight armor applications, particularly where maximum rifle protection at the lowest possible weight is required.

 

Adept manufactures and provides advanced Amorphoid plates and tiles to partners in industry, government, and academia. Amorphoid is a chemically-treated phase-change silicate which combines toughness and damage tolerance with class-leading performance in body armor systems and other forms of armor. Amorphoid enables particularly light articles of body armor and aerospace armor. The revolutionary Thunder armor plate is built around an Amorphoid core.

Amorphoid: Ultra-Light Silicate for Next-Generation Armor
Amorphoid represents a departure from conventional armor ceramics. Where traditional materials like alumina, silicon carbide, and boron carbide rely on crystalline structures to achieve hardness, Amorphoid leverages a proprietary phase-change silicate chemistry to deliver rifle-grade protection at dramatically reduced weight.

Exceptionally Low Density:
At just 2.2 g/cm³, Amorphoid is substantially lighter than silicon carbide (3.2 g/cm³), alumina (3.9 g/cm³), and even boron carbide (2.5 g/cm³). This density advantage translates directly into lighter finished armor systems — critical for dismounted operators, aircrew, and weight-sensitive platforms.

Thin-Section Performance:
Amorphoid defeats M855/SS109 steel-penetrator threats at just 4mm thickness. This thin-section capability enables plate designs that minimize bulk and improve wearability without sacrificing protection class.
 
Thermal Stability:
Unlike UHMWPE composites, Amorphoid maintains its ballistic properties across a wide operational temperature range, making it suitable for aerospace applications, desert environments, and other thermally challenging conditions where material consistency is essential.
